Future Man — A
Seth Rogen created another crazy but fun genre series with Future Man that doesn’t have to bend to broadcast constraints like Preacher. The unfiltered time-traveling show is full of crude humor and rated R scenes but is an entertaining ride. It isn’t going to win any awards this season, but it’s an enjoyable show for those who want something more light-hearted than other genre series.
Josh Hutcherson produces and stars in the show as a janitor/slacker who gets roped into a war from the future. After beating the “unbeatable game,” Biotic Wars, he is approached by two rebel leaders from the apocalyptic future who are looking for a savior. Unfortunately, he’s not the person they had in mind but the three do form a bond that saves the world.
Like all of Hulu shows, the acting is solid across the board. What’s the most striking is just how funny the series is. Of course, Preacher has been able to inject humor throughout it but Future Man gets free reign of just how many jokes they can add in.
Scenes are over the top because they can be and nudity can get gratuitous but for the most part everything is entertaining. There’s an entire episode dedicated to both ridiculing and praising James Cameron through his smart house. That alone should win over the hearts of viewers, with a lot of jokes about Cameron being an “expert on doors,” and forcing his Siri-type house to constantly speak to him in Na’avi, the language from his movie Avatar.
