The Mayor — B

Sadly, The Mayor is actually a very entertaining sitcom but doesn’t have the numbers to warrant a renewal. Critically a hit but ratings wise a miss, this series told the story of a young man who just wants to make things better in his town. What starts off as a publicity stunt for his upcoming rap album, he easily sees right through his wealthy opponent’s lies and wins over the public.

Once elected, he understandably makes a lot of mistakes while he sorts through his personal ambitions and his desire to help out around his city. It’s an ambitious storyline, and the current election showcases how the story could have easily been a heartwarming one like this. Anyone can make a difference as long as they try hard enough and new mayor Courtney Rose manages to rally his town together to make things better.

ABC needs to start compiling a sitcom section to start replacing some of its longer running shows. With The Middle ending and Modern Family  likely coming to a close in the end of a few years, The Mayor is a show whose viewership could grow. Right now it may be a steady but small number, but with the help of some streaming services and a good marketing plan, this series could easily be a hit next year. It’s something for the network to keep in mind because The Mayor truly is a good fall television show. Considering Disney has a stake in Hulu, it would probably be pretty inexpensive to give the show a push on social media in hopes of growing the fan base.
