4. The Crossing (ABC) – April 2

ABC is debuting a high-concept science fiction show for 2018 and hoping that it will be a success despite their recent track record with genre series. The Crossing is going to focus on a group of refugees seeking asylum from a war, except they’re escaping from over two hundred years in the future. It’s a huge risk for the network which has usually played it safe with Shonda Rhimes-produced dramas, and it could definitely pay off.

The creators did a lot at the TCA’s to calm down fearful critics by promising the show would focus a lot on the assimilation of these refugees just as much as the mystery rather than simply be a by-the-books mystery. Also, the ten-episode format helps for tighter story-telling rather than dragging viewers along for an unnecessarily long season.

Starring Steven Zahn as the small-town sheriff that fins everyone, his character Jude Miller is going to have his hands full. However, he’s not the only one with a lot of the refugees struggling to reconnect with society as well as find their loved ones.

The show seems like a mashup of Lost with The Returned and has all the potential to be just as interesting as either one. With broadcast television having to compete with streaming services or premium channels that are willing to take chances, it’s refreshing to see ABC finally roll the dice as well. The Crossing already has a perfect rating on IMDB, which should appease any doubtful viewers out there.
