3. Howards End (Starz) – April 8

Missed Hayley Atwell on television? She’ll be making her triumphant return in the new 2018 series Howards End on Starz. The series is based on a book of the same name that revolves around the intermingled lives of three very different families. Billed as a mini-series, the show has a lot of potential to continue onwards. With all the bad news plaguing Starz recently, they really need this series to be a win.

After Bryan Fuller and Gillian Anderson left American Gods and Optimum dropped the premium channel from their lineup, the network has had some difficulty. Unlike HBO or Showtime, Starz requires a separate subscription for its online service and that has hindered viewership compared to the other channels but hopefully, Towards End turns things around for them.

A lot of family melodrama is guaranteed to occur in this period drama set in London. The novel it’s based on is set in the early 1900’s and will showcase the gender dynamics of that time period. Atwell’s character will inadvertently become a key component in the will for her wealthy elder friend when she gets left a house.

Of course, the woman’s family is appalled that their mother wouldn’t leave the house to them and the battle of the families begins. With the success of complicated family dramas, Howards End can set itself apart in 2018 by being a period show with modern themes. Not to mention, a show with Atwell in the lead is worth checking out.
