18. The Alienist (TNT) – January 22

Chances are that anyone watching cable television has seen advertisements for TNT’s latest series. Boasting an extremely impressive cast, The Alienist looks like a compelling murder-mystery combined with a period drama. With the recent success of Netflix’s Mindhunter and the ongoing popularity of Criminal Minds, there should be plenty of viewers looking for more shows that explore the mentality of serial killers.

Dakota Fanning books her return to television since 2004 with one of the lead roles in the series: Sara Howard. A secretary at the police station, she has a fascination with crime solving despite the sexism she faces. Fanning is joined by Daniel Brühl, who recently joined the Marvel Universe in Captain America: Civil War, and Luke Evans, also seen on the big screen in the Disney movie Beauty and the Beast.

The former is playing an arrogant criminal psychologist named Dr. Laszlo Kriesler who is contacted by NYPD commissioner, Teddy Roosevelt, to track down a serial killer with an obsession with young male prostitutes. Evans is the final member of their ragtag team, John Moore, who is an illustrator with the newspaper and the most conventional of the three.

Already bringing in good reviews, The Alienist is poised to be one of the breakout shows of 2018. With Cary Fukunaga, one of the masterminds behind the first season of True Detective, billed as the creator for this TNT adaptation it looks like The Alienist has the perfect recipe for success. While the network is calling it a mini-series, if the show pulls in high enough ratings then a second season seems inevitable.
