17. Bellevue (WGN America) – January 23

Last year WGN America announced that they would be scaling back on their scripted series, which they used as the reason why they canceled almost all of their shows. Trying to get more cost-effective programming, the network makes their first move back into original shows by snatching up international distribution rights.

That starts with the CBC show, Bellevue, which stars Anna Paquin. It’s a story that focuses on the murder of a transgender teenager which sends the community into chaos with all of the finger-pointing. It seems like a typical police procedural, but the show is more about exploring the lurking hatred within a small town and one woman’s descent into darkness.

Paquin’s character is also dealing with quite a few personal issues while investigating the case. A ghost from her past comes back to haunt her in this eerie murder mystery that will capture viewers.

Unfortunately, the series was canceled on CBC, which means that a renewal will rely on strong ratings that WGN will be willing to pay for another season. However, with an Oscar-winning actress in the lead, Bellevue should attract a decent amount of viewers.

Paquin has been very careful choosing roles after her success on True Blood and she must have faith in this character to take on a television show. Often compared to Twin Peaks by Canadian viewers, Bellevue has the opportunity to be a reincarnation of the former in 2018 if the revival of the cult classic wasn’t your cup of tea.
