15. Altered Carbon (Netflix) – February 2

It’s easy to watch the trailer for Altered Carbon and think it’s going to be the television version of Blade Runner 2049. The cyberpunk noir mystery is set to debut on Netflix this February and already looks like a hit for the streaming service.

Based off of Richard Morgan’s successful three-book series, Altered Carbon will focus on the events from the first novel. Set five hundred years in the dystopian future, the series focuses on a time where human consciousness can be uploaded into other bodies. The process is called “sleeving” and the people who can afford to buy new bodies are capable of living forever. However, with the possibility of immortality looming over the heads of the population, death has lost its meaning in this futuristic society.

Joel Kinnaman leads the cast as Takeshi Kovacs, a soldier who has been awakened after two hundred and fifty years to try and solve the murder of an elite member of society. His boss, Laurens Bancroft, who is played by The Following‘s James Purefoy, offers Kovacs the opportunity to earn his freedom by discovering the identity of the person who killed him.

This sets off the noir mystery as the show explores the murder mystery as well as Takeshi’s past self where he will be portrayed by Will Yun Lee. A story with limitless potential and a diverse cast, Altered Carbon could be Netflix’s answer to Sense8 fans who were hoping for something more. With the rise of Hulu and Amazon, Netflix needs a new hit for 2018 which Altered Carbon could become.
