15. Highlander: The Series

Highlander was one a beloved fantasy movie that spawned some sequels that began to lower the bar. While Christopher Lambert always remained entertaining as Connor MacLeod, a warrior known as a Highlander, an immortal that finds himself unwittingly in a battle where the final surviving Highlander receives the Prize, the combined power of every immortal who ever lived.

However, in 1992, the Highlander mantle was passed on to another member of the Clann MacLeod and Duncan MacLeod, played by Adrian Paul. He was stepping into some large shoes as Lambert had solidified his role as the definitive Highlander. Something unusual then happened – fans gravitated to Duncan and won over the fans.

Highlander: The Series was a monster hit all over the world and lasted six seasons, entering syndication with 119 total episodes. There was even a bow tied on the end when Duncan and Connor MacLeod joined forces in the movie Highlander: Endgame where Duncan took Connor’s life to help them defeat a greater evil. Paul even got a second movie of his own with Highlander: The Source.

This wasn’t the only time that a movie was reimagined as a television series that surpassed the franchise in popularity but it is arguably the most successful thanks to the films that continued in the new direction. Adrian Paul didn’t just take over the lead, but he owned it.
