24. Camelot

Before Outlander became a hugely popular fantasy TV series on Starz, the network tried to head to medieval times once already with Camelot. Rumors indicate that the reason that Camelot did not get a second season was that it beaten routinely in the ratings by HBO’s Game of Thrones, which looking back seems an unfair comparison to try to expect any series to match up to that HBO juggernaut. Starz denied those rumors, saying there were conflicts with the cast that caused the cancelation.

As the name suggests, Camelot was based on the legend of King Arthur. The cast was fantastic with Jamie Campbell Bower (Twilight) as the young King Arthur, Eva Green (Penny Dreadful) as Morgan and Joseph Fiennes as Merlin. The series has Merlin seeing a dark future in Camelot, causing him to put the young Arthur in place as the new king. Morgan is his evil half-sister who wants her brother off the throne to take for herself.

When Camelot debuted, it was the highest rated Starz original series of all time with 1.1 million viewers. The viewing numbers dropped each week in the season until the end, which saw an uptick and the finale matched the premiere. While the ending of the season had a huge and controversial twist, the series still ended the main story of that season and did not leave fans hanging.

There were only 10 episodes in the first season of Camelot.
