6. Lost

Initially, Lost was a story of a group of people who survived an airline crash and found themselves stranded on a lost island with no chance of rescue. However, something happened in that first season as the romantic subplots, backstabbing and Lord of the Flies-styled action gave way to something ominous, mysterious and alien. Something was on this island other than the survivors, and there was a good chance that it wasn’t human.

The best thing about Lost, and what kept it positioned as one of the most-watched show on television for a number of years, was the characters. The love triangle between Jack, Sawyer and Kate; the drug addict trying to survive in Charlie; the loveable but depressed big man in Hurley; and the antagonistic Locke were all perfectly depicted, cast and kept fans glued to the TV for the series week after week.

There was a lot of complaints about the end of Lost but the fact is that the series set things up from the start and it had little chance of winning over all the fans since the “happily ever after” was never in the cards.

By the end, Lost was on the air for six seasons and 121 episodes and is one of the few fantasy TV series that controlled its destiny and finished the story in the manner it intended.
