4. Supernatural

Supernatural faced an uphill battle because it was the show that The WB replaced Angel with, after canceling the beloved vampire series. However, the story was a hit from the start, with Dean and Sam Winchester hunting demons and monsters while trying to find and defeat the creature that killed their mother.

The best parts of the show remain the dynamic between Sam and Dean, as the two brothers hunt monsters while fighting for their own souls and are just different enough to keep the tension raised at all times. Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles have kept the torch burning on Supernatural longer than any show on The CW and don’t look to be slowing down anytime soon.

However, much like similarly styled shows (the sci-fi hit The X-Files is a good example), there is also the underlying mythology that follows the boys from town to town and monster to monster. In this case, it is a war between Heaven and Hell and the boys standing in the middle, refusing to take sides, while both battling and teaming with angels and demons along the way.

There have been popular fantasy and sci-fi shows that have come and gone on television, but nothing has surpassed what Supernatural has accomplished. The series has been on for 13 seasons now and is closing in on 300 total episodes, the longest running fantasy TV series in history.
