Initially, Josh Foley is introduced as a member of the anti-mutant group, The Reavers, and is considered his school’s golden boy. However, when his powers manifest he’s beaten up by his “friends,” tossed aside by his family, and thrust at the mercy of the X-Men.
He has the perfect backstory to join the next season of The Gifted because the series plans on following the Purifiers, another mutant-hate group. It would add a new dynamic to the group to have someone who goes from hating mutants to having to join them compared to the Struckers’ blissful ignorance.
The number one risk of having Josh on the team would be that Caitlin’s character would become obsolete. However, that’s because people are thinking about Elixir now, not the person he started out as. In the comics now, he has an expert knowledge of biology, anatomy, and genetics (all given to him by the Frost sisters), which makes his healing ability almost limitless.
Yet, when he first joins the X-Men, he doesn’t even realize he can heal other people. He learns from his teachers that with the proper training he could begin saving members of the team. Since Andy abandoned the Underground, and by extension his family, Caitlin could take Josh under her wing as a protege. Missing her angst-ridden son, Elixir could fill the void and eventually become the second doctor to a team that needs all the help it could get. Since Andy and Lauren are also perfectly matched in combat, this could give the former a nemesis within the Underground.
