28. Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law

Adult Swim loves to serve up cartoons with a touch of nostalgia done in the most insulting way possible. Harvey Birdman is an attorney who works for Sebben & Sebben, a law firm that consists of former Hanna-Barbera cartoon characters. Their clients are also cartoon classics that fans grew up watching. This is very much an adult cartoon, with themes and storylines that are in no way at all meant for children.

Originally airing on Cartoon Network in 2000 as a spin-off of Space Ghost Coast to Coast, it moved to Adult Swim and lasted for four seasons with a total of 39 episodes. Along the way, Harvey Birdman was a criminal defense attorney, and his cases were either based on the characteristics of the beloved cartoon characters or were just gags based on their names or likeness.

An example is defending Shaggy and Scooby-Doo when police arrest them on drug charges, and the episode includes the Mystery Machine with pot smoke billowing out of the door cracks. Another example is defending Boo Boo Bear, who is tabbed the Una-Boo Boo Bomber, referencing real-life terrorist, the Unabomber.

As an adult cartoon, Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law was made for those college-aged young adults who grew up with Scooby-Doo, Yogi Bear and more. It was very clever and has no problem making fun of anyone and everyone from the viewer’s childhood with glee.
