26. Trollhunters

Not all of the great cartoons that adults can love are classics. Sure, there are many great cartoons from the past, but in today’s streaming video world, there are some fantastic options as well. In 2016, Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy, Pacific Rim) oversaw and brought the great Netflix animated cartoon Trollhunters into the world. What resulted, as expected from someone like Del Toro, was a cartoon that blew its contemporaries out of the water.

Trollhunters tells the story of Jim, a 15-year-old boy who finds an amulet and ends up named the new Trollhunter. With his friends Toby and Claire, and troll mentors in Blinky and AAARRGGHH!, Jim sets out to stop a group of goblins and Changelings from invading Earth. The amulet gives him a suit of armor, and despite the name of the show, he is not hunting trolls but instead helps and protects them from the bad seeds living in the Darklands.

This is an episodic series, with the first season on Netflix showing Jim forced into action to stop a villain named Angor Rot while trying to save Claire’s baby brother, who was replaced by a Changeling. The second season, which hit in 2017, starts with Jim in the Darklands trying to rescue the kidnapped babies. This is excellent stuff, not too violent for kids, but perfect for adults who love cartoons.

There have been only 26 episodes through the two seasons, but there is more to come, as Season 2 ended on a cliffhanger. This means that Guillermo Del Toro will keep fans entertained for the third and final season, returning in 2018.
