Remembering David Ogden Stiers: The 5 best TV roles of his career
By Shawn Lealos
2. Regular Show – Mr. Maellard
Over his career, David Ogden Stiers developed a significant number of animated voice roles. He had two long-running roles on cartoons — one being an eye-popping 66 episodes on Lilo & Stitch: The Series from 2003-2006 as the voice of Dr. Jumba Jookiba. However, his second role came on one of the best cartoons in recent memory — Regular Show.
Regular Show was a Cartoon Network series that stands up there with Adventure Time as one of the best cartoons for adults and kids alike. As fans of the show know, Mr. Maellard is the owner of the park that Benson works at and is a perfect antagonist to the hapless heroes on the show.
1. M*A*S*H – Major Winchester
Most fans know David Ogden Stiers from his role as Major Charles Emerson Winchester III, the second bunk-mate in “The Swamp” of practical jokesters Hawkeye and B.J. While he was brought in to be the replacement for Frank Burns, Winchester had the perfect character traits — an actual improvement over the often antagonistic Burns.
Instead of working as a jerk to the beloved Hawkeye and B.J., Winchester was more of a dignified gentleman, giving the relationship a new dynamic and making him a fun addition to the cast. From his love of Mozart to his cultural upbringing and impressive history (his character dated Audrey Hepburn), Winchester was a hugely popular addition to the cast and Stiers was perfect in the role.
