The Sopranos possibly headed to big screen with ‘The Many Saints of Newark’

The Sopranos ended with one of the most controversial — yet brilliant — final moments in television history when it bowed out on HBO after six seasons.

Tony Soprano sat in a diner with his wife and two kids and shared a nice dinner together. As people came in, the camera began to move around the faces nervously, and fans wondered if this was the moment that Tony finally met his end. However, the screen then went black and stayed that way for what seemed like forever.

With that, The Sopranos ended.

Fans called cable companies, and people were furious, thinking their cable service cut out at the final pivotal moment of the series. However, there was no “pivotal moment,” as the show ended as it began — with Tony sharing a moment with one of his families after six seasons of balancing his life between his real family and his mob family.

The show was over, and that was the end of The Sopranos.

However, it might not be the end after all. Deadline reports that Sopranos creator David Chase might be coming back for more — this time with a big-screen effort. New Line has purchased the script for the movie The Many Saints of Newark, which is a working title of a script that will be set in the world of The Sopranos but will work as a prequel.

This seems to be a recurring trend, as HBO is also looking at future projects set in the world of Game of Thrones, some of which could be prequels and feature new characters. While this will be a movie, and set outside of HBO, the idea that the most popular HBO series not named Game of Thrones could be getting the prequel treatment is interesting.

The Many Saints of Newark will take place in the ’60s around the time of the Newark riots between the African-Americans and Italian gangsters of Newark. There will be characters from The Sopranos that will appear in this series — including possibly Tony Soprano’s father Johnny Boy and Uncle Junior.

David Chase will serve as the producer and will help select a director for The Sopranos-world movie.
