9-1-1 Recap: ‘Karma’s A Bitch’
By Ariba Bhuvad
What goes around, comes around this week on 9-1-1.
Talk about one hell of an episode, right? This week, 9-1-1, went all out with its karma-centric episode. The team spends the day dealing with cases that involve victims of the infamous saying, “What goes around, Comes around.” And boy, did it ever. The episode begins with a case of a man who has accidentally shot himself. But there is a deeper history with this man who is someone the team has dealt with in the past.
A year prior to the day, the man’s wife hung herself because of his abusive behavior towards her. But before she ever did that, she had attempted to shoot him but missed when the bullet lodged itself into the tree. In the year that followed, that tree began to rot, so the man decided to blow it up. Well, karma truly is a bitch because the same bullet that had remained lodged in the tree came speeding out of there and hit him in the chest. R.I.P. man.
The second case led the team to a fitness center where the boss of the center was found fried in a tanning bed. He doesn’t make it, unfortunately, but his employee reveals the irony of his death. The day before, he left his dog in the car locked up in the heat and went inside the gym. At some point, one of his employees informs him the tanning bed is not working properly, a statement he chooses to ignore. The employee manages to get the dog out of the car, but karma comes knocking at his tanning bed the very next day.
The third call leads the team to a woman who steals packages from people’s porches, aka “porch pirate”. In an ironic twist of events, she falls down and trips while trying to steal a package and hurts herself.
And then comes the most karma-infused moment of the night. A man with his family at the zoo keep taunting a tiger to get a good picture. As fate would have it, the man heads to the bathroom, during which time the tiger jumps out of his compound. Despite his attempts to run away, the tiger eventually catches and kills him. But the crazy part comes when we learn that the man was an illegal poacher who was on the news for killing a lion during a hunting trip.
Back at the firehouse, Chimney organizes a blood drive, during which he convinces Bobby to donate. However, Bobby is afraid of needles and has had less than pleasant experiences in the past. After much begging and cajoling, Bobby donates blood but only to find out he has a rare blood type that could help millions of babies. While the irony is hilarious, it turns into an emotional moment for him when he realizes he wasn’t able to save his own children.
This week focuses a lot on relationships, particularly Athena and Hen’s. Athena has attempted to come to terms with her husband’s sexuality and new boyfriend but is unable to keep it together for the sake of their family. She tells him they must part ways now if she is to move on and remain on good terms with him. While Athena has a bittersweet ending to her relationship, this is not the case for Hen. After sleeping with her ex, Hen has been keeping the secret from her wife, and when she finally decides to come clean, it’s too late. Her ex has decided to sue them for custody of their child because Hen is unfit to care for him since Hen so easily slept with her. While we’re not sure this relationship is over for good, things aren’t looking so great for them.

And the moral of this week’s episode is, be nice and kind to others because if you aren’t, karma is waiting just around the corner.
