02.07: The Reluctant Taxidermist

Maggie tells Delchev where she hid the money. It’s in a taxidermied buffalo she and Reggie found in the parking garage of the Mohegan Sun Casino. Pete has been keeping an eye on it since he got out. Marius tells Delchev that he and Maggie are going to get the money back for him. Maggie goes to the farmhouse for tools while Marius gives Frank the slip and heads to the casino with Gina. Marius carves the initial “T.R.” into the buffalo’s hoof and then pretends that it’s a famous Teddy Roosevelt buffalo, convincing the casino manager Susannah that it’s extremely valuable but infested with hard-shelled beetle larva.

He is about to get the money when Maggie stops him, telling him that she had a new vision where they get to keep the money. Unfortunately, they made such a fuss that Maggie, Marius, and Gina are all banned from the casino and the buffalo is moved from the museum to the middle of the casino floor.

Julia settles down to guard flight-risk Valerie, but she manages to escape pretty quickly. Julia tracks her down to her friend’s house and finds out that Luis is planning to kill her. Julia calls Maggie to help lose their tail and Maggie locks Valerie up in one of Delchev’s storage unit for safe keeping.

Taylor retrieves the gun and plans to bury it with the housepainter to divert suspicion from Audrey. Colin takes over Valerie’s hit from Luis’s assassin.

Review:

The plot is really starting to tighten up now, everyone’s part starting to build into a more interconnected narrative. There seem to be fewer extraneous, distracting plot points.

Julia and Marius still make a great team, tricking the parole officer into buying his sob story about his step-daughter and a rescued cat. Surprisingly, Marius and Maggie also have great chemistry. When she plays along with Marius’ con, pretending that he’s Pete, Ribisi’s reaction is just so good, from dread to stunned to that delighted and devious smile.

There’s also something so annoying about Taylor and Shannon’s affair – or their general relationship – that feels so fake. Especially when compared to the clear and simple chemistry Taylor shares with Joyce, and its no wonder that rumors are flying about them.

Delchev is a little over the top, but Marius’s reaction the acid throwing and Joe’s death really sells the terror.
