Annihilation director is coming to TV and here is what his show is about
By Shawn Lealos
There has already been a masterpiece hit theaters in 2018 with the Alex Garland science fiction film Annihilation.
That was Alex Garland’s second directorial masterpiece, following his 2014 debut film Ex Machina. Fans might also know Garland as the writer of the fantastic 2002 zombie film 20 Days Later, the quite brilliant sci-fi films Sunshine and Never Let Me Go, and the fantastic 2012 comic book adaptation Dredd.
Adding them up, that is six great genre films that Garland either wrote or directed, making him one of the top names in the sci-fi genre today. With that in mind, it is exciting to announce that he is coming to television with the show Devs on FX.
Deadline reported that Devs is a “tech thriller” and FX has ordered a pilot episode. Here is the synopsis:
"In Devs, a young computer engineer, Lily, investigates the secretive development division of her employer, a cutting-edge tech company based in San Francisco, which she believes is behind the disappearance of her boyfriend."
Look back at the two films that Alex Garland directed. In Ex Machina, a cutting-edge tech company sends an employee (Domhnall Gleeson) to the home of the eccentric and secluded owner (Oscar Isaac), and he ends up serving as a test subject.
In Annihilation, an alien force has crashed onto Earth, and a scientist (Natalie Portman) joins an all-female taskforce to enter the area infected by the alien presence to learn what caused the disappearance of her boyfriend.

The synopsis for Devs sounds like a mixture of the two plot lines from these movies. Since those films, as well as Sunshine and Never Let Me Go both have deeper thinking into the meaning of life, this is a TV series that fans of hard thinking science fiction should be excited for.

Seeing how hard it was for Fringe to find a large fan base, it also might mean that Devs will struggle to make a dent if it is picked up at all after the pilot. Alex Garland mentioned that fans could expect sometime similar to Never Let Me Go or Ex Machina, but not quite as psychedelic as Annihilation.
Alex Garland will write and direct the pilot of Devs for FX. He also said it is an eight-part show, but there is no word on whether he can direct all eight episodes or not.
