Jeffrey Wright discusses Bernard’s health complications after last season’s events in Westworld.

After what seems like the longest hiatus everWestworld is set to return to our lives come April 22. As the world prepares for the epic return of HBO’s critically-acclaimed series, Jeffrey Wright talks about the upcoming second season and what it means for his character Bernard.

If you recall, the first season threw us for a loop with the reveal that Bernard is a host in Westworld. In an effort to escape his life as a host, Bernard was forced to shoot himself in the head. He was resurrected in time for the finale. However, Wright shares that this will have some serious repercussions for Bernard going into season two.

"“He’s got some cognitive challenges as we enter the first episodes of season 2 and he has additional challenges that come up as he goes on board in terms of him being able to process.”"

While Bernard may be grappling with health issues, there is still speculation surrounding who Bernard is loyal to. He spent his life believing he was human and with his recent awareness of being a host, it will surely be an interesting part of his journey in season two.

"“Bernard is in a pretty peculiar, kind of unique position in that he’s got certain allegiances to both sides and I think that’s part of the consideration for him. I think given his robot brain situation and given kind of the social situation around him in terms of having been human and then discovering he’s a host, but he’s aspiring to kind of an awakening as the hosts are, the question for him at the beginning as you might expect is: ‘Where am I? Where am I in all of this?’ We lead from there.”"

Bernard was created by Ford to mimic a version of his dead partner, Arnold, which begs the question, “Will Bernard prove to be more complex than any other host in Westworld?” Who knows what intricacies and secrets in Bernard’s host “DNA” Ford has left behind for Bernard to discover?

The trailers and sneak peek released so far allude to a version of “Westworld Gone Wild” as the hosts seem to have taken over the park. Will humans cease to exist in their world? And if not, will the roles be reversed?

What we do know is Bernard is seen alongside the security staff of Delos in the teasers, so perhaps he will be the voice of reason to calm the angry hosts down.

Westworld has confirmed that a younger version of Robert Ford will be in season two so it appears we may get a deeper understanding of who Bernard is–and how he came to be.
