Things are just getting started when Santa Clarita Diet returns for season two.
Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant, stars of Netflix’s zombie-themed comedy Santa Clarita Diet recently spoke with Variety about the upcoming second season.
It has been over a year since the first season, and according to Barrymore and Olyphant, season two will pick up right where the events of season one left off.
The two play a married couple in the comedy and spend the first season dealing with Sheila (Barrymore) turning into a zombie and her desire to eat human flesh. In an effort to keep her contained and figure out a cure, Sheila is chained up in the basement at the end of the first season.
However, Joel is accidentally sent off to a mental institution.
Olyphant reflected on the show’s future if a zombie cure was discovered and doesn’t appear too enthusiastic about the future.
"“I would say the answer is no. I don’t want to give anything away, but I don’t see a cure coming. I only see things getting worse.”"
Barrymore also talked about the balanced dynamic they have on the show (which will continue to be a part of season two) between their family and dealing with her being a zombie.
"“I think the show is about a married a couple and a marriage that’s constantly getting challenged. And this husband and wife react to that. But I also love the balance. One moment you’re hearing the craziest thing you’ve ever said or heard and the next it’s where are our garden hoses and why are they getting stolen? Typical mundane suburban things. We’re also raising a teenage daughter, so there’s a domestic element. It’s all very human and suburban and relatable, and the stakes are crazy. But I think in this world, you need to go to this crazy place for it to be shocking.”"
So what can we look forward to in season two of Santa Clarita Diet? While they weren’t able to dish on the details, we can expect to see them working on their marriage as well as keeping the family together through this odd journey.
There will also be a quest to discover how Sheila became a zombie and if there are others out there like her. A lot is at stake and we can’t wait to see where the story goes!
