FX’s Trust is being accused of being defamatory towards its depiction of the Getty family.

FX’s Trust is just days away from premiering its first season that depicts the story of John Paul Getty III’s kidnapping in 1973. Deadline reported that the attorney representing Getty’s sister is now speaking out on behalf of the family to state that the series is a “wildly sensationalized false portrayal” of their family and insists on viewing all ten episodes of the limited series.

Martin Singer, the attorney, wrote a letter in which Danny Boyle, executive producer, and FX are being called out for implying that the Getty family played a role in the kidnapping in order to get money from the head of the family.

"“This is outrageous. It is ironic that you have titled your television series Trust. More fitting titles would be Lies or Mistrust, since the defamatory story it tells about the Gettys colluding in the kidnapping is false and misleading.”"

As of now, FX has not responded with a return comment regarding these allegations.

When Getty was 16 years old he was kidnapped, tortured, and held captive while his family received a ransom note demanding $17 million. The kidnapping eventually led to nine arrests and two criminal convictions.

This is not the first time FX is being accused of portraying events incorrectly. After last year’s premiere of Ryan Murphy’s Feud: Bette and Joan, actress Olivia de Havilland decided to sue the network along with Murphy’s production over how she was portrayed by Catherine Zeta-Jones.

When it comes to Trust, Singer stated that the series makes the family members appear “mean-spirited” and implies they cooperated out of greed during the kidnapping. Due to such implications, Singer stated in his letter that this could make the network and Boyle legally liable for being defamatory.

Due to this, he insists that all ten episodes are made available to the family for review or legal action may be taken.

"“This is an extremely serious matter. We caution you in the strongest possible terms to refrain from continuing to defame Ariadne Getty and portraying her in an offensive false light. If you persist in doing so, you proceed at your own peril.”"
