The Handmaid’s Tale spills at PaleyFest about the upcoming second season.

Over the weekend, the cast and creators of Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale talked about the new season at a panel during PaleyFest. What can we expect going into season two? Executive producer Bruce Miller shared his thoughts about how Gilead will be a part of the characters, rather than just a place going into season two.

"“Once you’ve gotten out of Gilead, what happens? How do you recover? A theme of the season is Gilead is within you so you don’t lose it when you leave.”"

While season one remained in the confines of Gilead, season two will explore places outside of it–mainly the infamous, dreadful Colonies.

Miller shared his vision of what he hoped to achieve for the second season and how he hoped to explore the female relationships outside of Gilead.

"The Colonies is really the ultimate result of misogyny and cruelty and discarding of women — but even in this cruelty, you see the women find chances to support each other and mark their milestones. So much of the show is about the incredible resilience and strength of June but also all women, specifically.”"

Alexis Bledel’s Ofglen will be seen in the Colonies during season two and also be assigned to a new commander who will be played by Bradley Whitford. Who else can we expect to see working alongside her in the cruel Colonies? One-eyed Janine, played by Madeline Brewer, that’s who.

Both Janine and Ofglen will be a part of the Colonies’ toxic wasteland environment as they face a harsher reality than perhaps that of Gilead.

Moira (Samira Wiley) and Luke (O-T Fagbenle) will be seen living together in Toronto, aka “Little America.” After the traumatic events they both have gone through, they will depend on one another to get through the emotions of their reality.

However, things won’t be too peachy for June (Elisabeth Moss) back in Gilead as her challenging attitude has Serena (Yvonne Stravohski) in an uproar. Stravohski talked about Serena’s mental state of mind while she tries to deal with a rebellious June.

"“For Serena this is the first time things come crashing down a little bit for her, and I think she feels a little lost. The one thing that she wants is that baby — that is her greatest survival mechanism in a world where she, too, is challenged and doesn’t have much of a voice, either. So to know she might not get that just makes the prison walls feel like they’re coming in even more. It’s very interesting to see it become Serena’s prison for a second there.”"

Season two will also introduce June’s mother, an old-fashioned feminist, who will be played by Cherry Jones. And if all of that isn’t enough to get you hyped for what’s to come, then this surely will. The show will also reflect back on what the press was reporting when Gilead came to be–and visit the Boston Globe.

The flashbacks will be a big part of season two as well as the audience will continue to learn about America’s transition into letting a place like Gilead exist.

Season two of The Handmaid’s Tale will premiere on Hulu with two episodes on April 25.
