Good Girls recap: ‘Atom Bomb’

“Atom Bomb” is the natural progression for Good Girls but it’s still a little clunky.

The episode has the women officially embrace their roles as amateur criminals. It feels like a bit of a retread but the cast manages to sell the repetitive parts. At least the hour does expand the supporting characters past generically evil.

After Beth approached Rio last week for more jobs, the women find themselves in a new situation. A bloodied gangster ends up in Beth’s daughter’s bed and they’re shocked to learn their job is to keep him safe. “Atom Bomb” continues to keep the motivation for doing crime entirely based off of finances.

Annie actually doesn’t need money this week compared to Ruby and Beth who find themselves dealing with a new set of issues. Beth’s son is demanding an expensive birthday party and his parents reuniting while Ruby is harassed at work.

Right now, Ruby is by far the most sympathetic of the three women. She desperately needs to money to keep her daughter alive and she is ridiculed at her exhausting waitressing job. Yes, she should take the high road but it’s hard not to root for her. The boy who made fun of her was an entitled jerk and watching her knock him down a few pegs was gratifying.

Beth, on the other hand, is plagued by a dead-weight husband and spoiled kids. Who asks their parents for an overpriced birthday party knowing it’s too expensive? It definitely doesn’t help make Beth’s family life any more appealing.

Annie and Greg are on the same team this week in a surprising twist. Poor Sadie is getting bullied at school by some boys who keep pulling down her pants. Greg is upset when he finds out his daughter punched a boy, but when he discovers why he’s infuriated.

It’s nice that Good Girls is trying to make sure the audience knows that he’s not the bad guy in this whole scenario. He’s just a dad who wants the best for his daughter even if he’s not always on the same page as Annie. Their interactions in “Atom Bomb” finally show how the two were together in the first place.

Beth has another last-minute save when she thinks of a new business proposition for Rio. After buying a bunch of stuff for the birthday party only to return it, she realizes they can clean his counterfeit money that way.

It promises a relationship between the two that won’t be as antagonistic in the future. Now that Dean is faking cancer to try and win her back, her romantic life is going to get complicated.

Now that the police are onto the women, it should lead to a new storyline. “Atom Bomb” feels like a retread of the past four episodes so it’s nice to see a new antagonist. However, it will be interesting to see who becomes the most hated character by the finale: Dean or Boomer.
