Star Trek Discovery season 2 update

Star Trek: Discovery is preparing launch for its second season.

Showrunners of Star Trek: Discovery Gretchen J. Berg and Aaron Harberts, speaking at WonderCon 2018, gave fans some updates on season two.

Despite the questionable decision of airing the show exclusively on the CBS All Access subscription service, fans of Star Trek were sufficiently curious about the new series to drive subscriptions up enough to call for a second season.

With the season ending on the cliffhanger of the Discovery coming face to face with the USS Enterprise, the stage is set for Discovery to introduce Captain Christopher Pike and Mr. Spock.

The series is set a decade before Captain Kirk’s five-year mission, but there are plenty of callbacks to the original series — including characters, creatures, and circumstances — and is now set to cast new actors in some classic roles.

Berg and Harberts revealed at WonderCon that Discovery has been renewed for a thirteen episode season and that production will begin in April — which probably means we won’t see season two until at least the end of 2018, if not later.

No news on whether further tie-in novels — which, unlike most Star Trek novels, are considered canon — will be released in the meantime, but it would be a lucrative way to hold fans over for the long wait.

Of course, not only was Star Trek: Discovery season 1 extended by two episodes after the initial order of thirteen, but it was also plagued with production delays, making the wait especially long. Hopefully, season two gets the same extension without the delays.
