Amazon to create A League of Their Own series

A League of Their Own television series? We are so in!

Amazon is reportedly working on a television adaptation of the Penny Marshall classic, A League of Their Own. If you recall, the original movie starred the amazing Tom Hanks and was a raving box office success.

The fictional story tells the tale of the real-life All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. Hanks played the role of Jimmy Dugan, the manager of the team.

However, Amazon will not be following the movie version for its adaptation. It will not be based on the same characters and will be a half-hour comedy with a modern twist on the story.

While Amazon will be the project’s distributor, Sony will produce the series. Will Graham will be executive producing and write the series. Graham already works on another Amazon original, Mozart In the Jungle.

He will work alongside Abbi Jacobson who is known for her role as Abbi on Broad City.

The series has not yet been ordered to series and The Hollywood Reporter states that a decision will be made once scripts are written and delivered. Amazon released an official synopsis for the show:

"“A League of Their Own is a half-hour comedy infusing the warmth, humor and DNA of the classic film, while taking a contemporary spin on the stories of the women surrounding the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League.The show will begin with the formation of the league in 1943 and follows the Rockford Peaches, season to season as they struggle to keep the team alive through close games, injuries, late night bar crawls, sexual awakenings, not crying and road trips across a rapidly changing United States. The series dives deeper into the issues facing the country while following a ragtag team of women figuring themselves out while fighting to realize their dreams of playing professional baseball.”"

For those who have not seen the original movie or can’t recall the details, let us help you out! The original movie focused on the sibling rivalry between two sisters. The original actresses were contacted to get their blessing for the series.

Surprisingly, this is not the first time there has been an attempt to make the original movie into a television series. CBS attempted to do this back in 1993 but only completed three episodes.

We can expect that the Amazon adaptation will stay true to the original story while bringing in new elements to add a unique touch to it as well.
