With filming complete, Netflix still hasn’t released a premiere date for the hit hour-long drama series, 13 Reasons Why. Rumors are swirling as to why.

On March 31, 2017, 13 Reasons Why debuted on Netflix. The hour-long drama became an instant hit with viewers, striking a chord with audiences over its blunt account of teen suicide, substance abuse, and rape.

The series quickly secured a second season and Season 2 finished filming back in December of last year, yet the fans are still waiting for so much as a released date for its debut.

So, when the heck will we finally see Season 2?

According to Screen Rant, some speculate that Netflix is planning to hit everyone with a surprise release of 13 Reasons Why‘s second season. They’ve done it before with Orange is the New Black back in 2015 by releasing it a few days early and they just did it again this year with The Cloverfield Paradox.

Many thought the series would drop on March 31, the one-year anniversary of Season 1’s premiere date. But the date came and went with no update on Season 2.

Others theorize that the creators needed to make some edits.

According to this Reddit thread, the rumor was that the second season was going to debut in May, but was being edited “due to the content and certain current events.” But what could be so controversial that is more than the dark subject matter we saw last season?

At the end of Season 1, we see Tyler Down (Devin Druid) entering school with a bag full of guns and ammunition and a “hit list.” This is really disturbing; and considering today’s climate, I can see why Netflix would want to edit a school shooting out of Season 2.

Netflix is perceptive to the controversy that surrounds the hit show. They’re taking certain measures to open up more lines of communication for those at risk who watch the show. They will also add a disclaimer video at the beginning of each season of the show.

Season 1 of 13 Reasons Why is currently streaming on Netflix.
