Netflix has released a trailer for its upcoming post-apocalyptic series, The Rain.

The new original series, The Rain, will start streaming on Netflix soon. In anticipation of its premiere, the service has dropped a trailer showcasing the atmospheric drama.

In the eight-episode first season, we learn most of the Scandinavian population was wiped out after the rain spread a deadly virus. Years later, a brother and sister emerge from a bunker to join a group of survivors searching for safety.

The brother, Rasmus, may be the key to curing the deadly disease that still makes getting wet fatal.

The show is billed as a YA series. It’s also the first Netflix original from Denmark. Per SlashFilm, the series could be part of Netflix’s strategy to expand its international offerings.

Ted Sarandos, Netflix’s Chief Content Officer, said,

"When stories from different countries, languages and cultures find a worldwide platform where the only limitation is the creator’s imagination, then unique, yet universal, stories emerge that are embraced by a global audience."

The premise of The Rain may seem a little hokey — unless you’re the Wicked Witch of the West or perhaps a resident of precipitation-starved Southern California — and it brings up some practical implications. For instance, what do they do about drinking water?

But the series looks sleek and moody. Just the kind of post-apocalyptic/youth-oriented drama that drove The Hunger Games movies and the TV show The 100 to success.

This is the first Netflix original series from Denmark and is created by Jannik Tai Mosholt, Christian Potalivo and Esben Toft Jacobsen.
