On July 10, 2018, Hulu unleashed a new trailer for its upcoming Stephen King series, Castle Rock, which premieres on July 25!

The Youtube trailer, which reveals more details while remaining mysterious, already has almost 6 million views. This suggests Castle Rock is a highly anticipated series. Hulu summarizes the trailer like this: “In answer to a mysterious phone call from Shawshank, Henry Deaver returns home to #CastleRock.”

Fans are already scrambling to find the “easter eggs” in the preview, and speculating on Bill Skarsgård’s role in the series. His character — known as “The Kid” — has been a subject of debate. Is he a new character altogether, or might be reprising his popular role as Pennywise (AKA “Bob Gray”) from It? Another suggestion is that he may be Randall Flagg from The Stand.  Whatever his role, he is definitely generating buzz for the show, and for the upcoming It sequel. Although It actually occurs in the town of Derry, Maine, that doesn’t mean there couldn’t be a tie-in of some kind.

The trailer also references It by the appearance of balloons, and briefly references Cujo as a “rabid dog” in a newspaper clipping. The music? Ricky Nelson’s “Lonesome Town,” a melancholy, crooning ballad containing lyrics like, “In the town of broken dreams/The streets are paved with regret/Maybe down in lonesome town/I can learn to forget…” The lyrics — which are sad on their own — take on a darker tone when paired with the unfortunate town of Castle Rock.

In general, Hulu has called Castle Rock “A psychological-horror series set in the Stephen King multiverse” which “combines the mythological scale and intimate character storytelling of King’s best-loved works, weaving an epic saga of darkness and light, played out on a few square miles of Maine woodland.” For more information and updates on Castle Rock (and other shows) you can subscribe to Hulu’s Youtube channel — and, of course, follow Show Snob!
