The Politician, Ryan Murphy’s Netflix Comedy Series, Adds Zoey Deutsch, Lucy Boynton and More to Cast

The cast of Ryan Murphy’s first Netflix show, the comedy The Politician, is signing on some big names and exciting newcomers.

Actresses Zoey Deutsch, Lucy Boynton, Laura Dreyfuss, and Rahme Jones have all been announced as series regulars, according to Deadline.

They will appear opposite Ben Platt, known for his starring role in the Broadway musical Dear Evan Hansen. Platt was previously cast as Payton, the politician of the title.

It was reported earlier that Gwyneth Paltrow is also likely to be part of the cast. Barbra Streisand is in talks to appear as well.

The series is the brainchild of Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Ian Brennan, who previously created Glee together. All three will write and executive produce the show, and Murphy will also serve as showrunner.

The one-hour series centers on a wealthy man from Santa Barbara with political aspirations. Each season will focus on one of the political campaigns in which Platt’s character becomes enmeshed. The show is described as a comedy that features social commentary.

Deutsch was most recently seen in the recently released Netflix movie Set it Up. She also appeared in last year’s The Disaster Artist, Rebel in the Rye, and The Year of Spectacular Men.

Boynton’s credits include films like Murder on the Orient Express and Sing Street. She will be seen later this year in the anticipated Bohemian Rhapsody, which hits theaters in November.

Dreyfuss is best known to television audiences for her role as Madison McCarthy in the final season of Glee. As a result, her role on The Politician reunites her with Murphy, Falchuk, and Brennan.

The role also re-teams her with Platt, who she starred with in Dear Evan Hansen, in which she originated the part of the female lead, Zoe Murphy.

Finally, Jones is a newcomer who will be making her TV debut with The Politician. Previously, she starred in cabarets and the production of Godspell in New York City. She has also modeled for various ad campaigns.

The Politician is shaping up to have a deep bench of interesting and diverse talent. Not much is known about the series, but based on the casting announcements, the cast is heavily female.

Outside of lead actor Platt, no additional male series regulars have been announced. Given the show is taking place in the world of politics, it will be interesting to see what roles each of the actors will play and how they all fit together.
