Deadwind (Karppi) — August 23

I’m a sucker for a Scandinavian crime drama, so if you’re a fan of Bordertown, Wallander, The Killing, or The Bridge, chances are Deadwind will be right up your ally.

The Finnish series follows police detective Sophia Karppi (Pihla Viitala) who must solve the murder of a woman found at a construction site in Helsinki.

A recent widow and single mother, Karppi must balance her personal struggles with the demands of her job while searching for a killer.

One of the reasons I love Scandinavian dramas is because the main protagonist is so often a strong, capable, professional, and intelligent woman, and Deadwind (called Karppi in Finland for the main character) looks like another solid addition to the trend.

Ghoul — August 24

Ghoul is Netflix’s second Indian original series after premiering the crime thriller Sacred Games last month.

Ghoul is a horror thriller starring Sacred Games’ Radhika Apte and centers around a prisoner who arrives at a remote military interrogation complex and ends up threatening the facility’s entire staff by uncovering all their darkest secrets.

As implied by the title, the horror in the series has a creepy supernatural element. The trailer by itself is scary enough, dark and atmospheric with a slightly sickening and unsettling color palette that works beautifully to heighten the tension.

I can’t wait to be scared out of my mind.
