1. Battlestar Galactica

In 1978, there was a science fiction TV series called Battlestar Galactica. It was basically a Star Trek ripoff but had enough original ideas to help it stand out on its own. With Dirk Benedict, Richard Hatch and Lorne Greene leading the way, it still only lasted one season, although a spinoff two years later gave it 10 more episodes.

That is not the Battlestar Galactica that sits at number one on the list of best science fiction television shows of all-time.

No, the series that tops this list was the remake that came in 2003. Originally airing as a three-hour movie on the Sci-Fi Channel, Battlestar Galactica took the storyline from the first movie and threw in political intrigue to make it the smartest space opera in television history.

Edward James Olmos was Adama, the commanding officer of the Galactica — the only remaining military ship after the Cylons launched an attack that wiped out almost the entire population of the Twelve Colonies of planets. The goal of the Galactica is to find a mythological planet that might hold hope known as Earth.

Joining him on the ship is the President and only survivor of the Colonial government Laura Roslin (Mary McDonnell). Dirk Benedict’s Starbuck was gender-swapped with Katee Sackhoff turning in a career-defining role that made her a huge geek favorite.

Battlestar Galactica aired for four seasons and 75 episodes and told one of the greatest sci-fi stories that television has ever seen.

There was a spinoff called Caprica that lasted one season and another called Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome as a web series.

While some felt the series ended on a whimper, the fact is that the ride was what made it worth it and Battlestar Galactica deserves all the credit it ever received.
