Star Trek: Discovery mini series starts this October

Star Trek: Short Treks, a four-part miniseries will debut on October 4.
The long wait for the second season of Star Trek: Discovery has been alleviated – somewhat. TVLine reports that the Star Trek: Short Treks miniseries, which was announced at SDCC earlier this year, will debut on October 4 on CBS All Access. The four-part series will focus on a single character in each episode, starting with none other than fan-favorite Ensign Sylvia Tilly (played by Mary Wiseman).
The episodes will be released monthly with dates and plotlines for each episode already confirmed, according to TVLine. No news yet whether the episodes will be released simultaneously on Netflix, the streaming service that syndicated the first season of the show.
The episodes of Star Trek: Short Treks will be approximately 10-15 minutes long, and feature three characters viewers are already familiar with – Tilly, First Officer/Acting Captain Saru (Doug Jones), and the villainous Harry Mudd (Rainn Wilson). The second episode is set to feature a brand new character named Craft, played by Friday Night Lights alum Aldis Hodge. Here’s hoping we get to see more of Hodge in season 2 as he is an incredible talent and would add to the dwindling diversity on the show.

However, this unlikely pair may have more in common than meets the eye.“Calypso” (Thursday, Nov. 8) — After waking up in an unfamiliar sickbay, Craft (Aldis Hodge) finds himself on board a deserted ship, and his only companion and hope for survival is an A.I. computer interface.“The Brightest Star” (Thursday, Dec. 6) — Before he was the first Kelpien to join Starfleet, Saru (Doug Jones) lived a simple life on his home planet of Kaminar with his father and sister. Young Saru, full of ingenuity and a level of curiosity uncommon among his people, yearns to find out what lies beyond his village, leading him on an unexpected path.“The Escape Artist” (Thursday, Jan. 3) — Harry Mudd (Rainn Wilson), back to his old tricks of stealing and double-dealing, finds himself in a precarious position aboard a hostile ship — just in time to try out his latest con."
Star Trek: Discovery has gathered quite a fanbase with its nods to nostalgia combined with modern sensibilities. The second season, which will air in early 2019, is set to add more canon characters, with Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) taking over the lead of the ship, and a young Spock, played by Ethan Peck, appearing alongside his foster sister, Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green).
After a relatively gritty first season where the crew of the Discovery battled Klingons, the trailer for next year’s season suggests a lighter tone and a call back to the optimism of the original Star Trek. Well, we can assume that if Tilly’s involved, we will all be smiling.
