Star Trek: Short Treks, the four-part short form series tied in with Star Trek: Discovery, has released the first trailer for the first episode.

With CBS’s expansion of the Star Trek franchise, one of the most different and innovative directions they took was to produce a series of short-form episodes to be released over the months leading up to the release of Star Trek: Discovery’s season two. Star Trek: Short Treks will focus on a different Discovery character in each episode and the first episode, called “Runaway” to be released October 4, stars Mary Wiseman as Ensign Sylvia Tilly.

In the trailer, she is just minding her own business when some sort of invisible entity, who is maybe bleeding, starts causing chaos and destruction in the ship’s cafeteria. The episode is written by Alex Kurtzman and Jenny Lumet and directed by Maja Vrvilo.

There are three other episodes set to come out before the early 2019 release of Star Trek: Discovery; one featuring Doug Jones as Saru, another starring Rainn Wilson as Harry Mudd, and the another introducing Aldis Hodge as a new character named Craft.

“Each episode will deliver closed-ended stories while revealing clues about what’s to come in future Star Trek: Discovery episodes,” explained showrunner Kurtzman. “They’ll also introduce audiences to new characters who may inhabit the larger world of Star Trek.” It also keeps audiences engaged between seasons of Star Trek: Discovery and consistently subscribed to CBS All Access. While I am by no means against the reinvigoration of the Star Trek franchise, for CBS it is just a means to keep people subscribed to their streaming service.

Star Trek: Short Treks seems to be just one of many spin-off productions planned by CBS, but except for the upcoming Jean-Luc Picard series starring Patrick Stewart no further announcements have been made regarding what else they have planned.
