Animated Netflix series F is for Family has added Vince Vaughan to its roster of voice characters, as Colonel Chet Stevenson.

Who is Colonel Chet Stevenson? He is a new neighbor to Frank Murphy. He is apparently also quite an Air Force pilot, judging by the NSFW preview.

Created by Bill Burr and Michael Price, season 3 F is for Family is scheduled for a November 2018 release. In addition to the Vince Vaughan’s character, the show stars Bill Burr as Frank Murphy, and is loosely based on Burr’s standup comedy.

The rest of the Murphy family features Laura Dern as Sue, Justin Long as Kevin, Haley Reinhart as Bill, and Debi Derryberry as Maureen. Sam Rockwell also stars as Vic, a wealthy, braggart neighbor.

The show takes place in the 1970s – “A time when you could smack your kid, smoke inside, and bring a gun to the airport.”  Burr has characterized animation as a good place for his humor, as people nowadays are less inclined to laugh at darker, more offensive things.

In contrast, he says “the easily-offended avoid animation.” His character Frank Murphy is known for being irate, verbally criticizing his kids and arguing with his wife.  In other words, he could be considered abusive, especially by today’s standards.  At the same time, he’s a realistic character.

A quote that sums up his character?  “What’s the point of it all anyway? The point is that’s life, and life has no point. You work hard, you get ahead, you start a family, and the kids don’t appreciate you.

Next thing you know, you’re old, no one comes around anymore, and you’re staring at the wall.  One day, the neighbors notice a funny smell, and that’s when they figure out the cat’s eating your face.”

In some ways, he’s a successor to other cantankerous TV dads, like Fred Flintstone, Al Bundy, Archie Bunker and Homer Simpson.  At the same time, he outdoes most of them in some key ways, making the show lively and outrageous.
