When Herschel died on The Walking Dead, it was one of the most heartbreaking moments in the show’s history.

Now, on the day that The Walking Dead confirmed that Scott Wilson would return to the show as Hershel along with Jon Bernthal as Shane, terrible news broke.

ComicBook reported that Scott Wilson passed away at the age of 76.

Throughout this entire year, Wilson had been active in attending conventions concerning The Walking Dead and had even revived his role as Herschel on The Walking Dead’s Robot Chicken special.

The return of Shane was announced earlier this year and most expected him to be a vision that Rick had or for there to be flashbacks. With the news that Hershel was returning, it seems the flashbacks was the case.

Sonequa Martin-Green, who played Sasha and is now starring on Star Trek: Discovery, will also return this season.

Titus Welliver, who starred on Bosch with Wilson reported the passing of his co-star and friend on Twitter.

With many people wondering if it was true, The Walking Dead officially announced his passing as well through a tweet.

Scott Wilson played Hershel on The Walking Dead, a highly religious and good man who soon became the heart and soul of the survivors during his time on the series.

He then watched most of his family die and ended up as an overly protective father to his daughters Beth (Emily Kinney) and Maggie (Lauren Cohan). He also developed a strong relationship with Maggie’s future husband Glenn (Steven Yeun).

Maggie is the only character of those remaining alive on The Walking Dead and she is leaving this season as well. Hershel died at the hands of The Governor in the standoff at the prison in season 4.

According to producers, The Walking Dead is expected to pay tribute to Scott Wilson with a memorial credit tag sometime in this upcoming season.

The Walking Dead season 9 premieres on Sunday night at 9 p.m. EST on AMC.
