Gotham NYCC: Will we see a baby Batgirl in season 5?

Gotham will want to go out strong in its fifth and final season on Fox. Could that include an appearance baby Batgirl? Who could the mother be?

Gotham‘s upcoming fifth season seems set to pull out all the stops and end with a bang. David Mazouz revealed at New York Comic Con today that fans will indeed see Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) become Batman by the end of the series. Could fans also witness the introduction of baby Barbara Gordon, who becomes Batgirl?

Gotham executive producer at NYCC declined to confirm or deny that baby Batgirl will make an appearance. However, it certainly seems like a possibility, if only because Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) deserves to have at least somewhat of a happy ending. This is Gotham, so the end will be bittersweet at best, but Jim having a child could be a light in the darkness.

To put it lightly, Jim has not had the best of luck with relationships. His first love Barbara Kean (Erin Richards) went from being his mild-mannered fiancée to a murderous and unstable villain. Barbara has gradually become more grounded in the intervening years, though. Could a reconciliation be in their future?

Meanwhile, Jim and Lee Thompkins (Morena Baccarin) have been through so many and ups and downs — from his prison sentence to her miscarriage to him killing her new husband and so on — that it’s hard to keep track. They always find their way back to one another, only for everything to fall apart all over again.

Near the end of season four, though, Lee double-crossed her then-partner The Riddler (Corey Michael Smith) to save Jim’s life, which suggests she still cares about him. Could season five finally be their year?

Jim will almost assuredly not end up living happily ever after with either of them. That would be a bit too cushy for Gotham. As for who he might have a child with, though, Barbara is ostensibly the more likely candidate. In the comics, Barbara Kean is the mother of Barbara Gordon, hence the name.

However, Gotham has certainly deviated from its comic origins before, including its portrayal of another iconic relationship: Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle (Camren Bicondova). It stands to reason that Lee being the mother of Barbara Gordon is not out of the question.

Gotham will return for season five in 2019. Do you want to see Batgirl make an appearance? Let us know in the comments section.
