Steven Knight’s crime drama series Peaky Blinders has added its first new character for Season 5.

BBC’s Peaky Blinders and the Shelby crime family will return in 2019, and while most of Season 5’s plot has been kept under wraps, the first new casting has been announced. American-born British-Argentinian actress Anya Taylor-Joy will be joining Peaky Blinders in an undisclosed role.

Some might recognize Taylor-Joy as a kidnapped victim in the film Split, her character constantly at odds against a crazed man with multiple personality disorder. Also among her past works are films The Witch and Morgan. Before Season 5 airs, fans might find Taylor-Joy even more recognizable. The young actress will star in The Glass (probably to face off against the antagonist from Split for the second time) and is top-billing in 2019’s X-Men filmThe New Mutants.

While her role in the show hasn’t been revealed, Taylor-Joy told Deadline, “I could not possibly be more excited to be joining such a talented group of people. I can’t wait to get in and play this character.”

What we have so far regarding Season 5’s plot seems interesting. Creator of Peaky Blinders, Steven Knight had this to say:

"“The story of the Peaky Blinders and of the Shelby family gets woven into the political fabric of Britain and Europe as the 1920s end and the 30s begin. Tommy Shelby faces the darkest force he has ever faced and his struggle is as relevant today as it was then.”"

Tommy and his family are always under fire, no matter how many struggles they overcome or victories they achieve. It makes me wonder where Taylor-Joy will fit into the grand scheme of things. Photos were revealed from the set of Season 5, showing Taylor-Joy standing beside Michael (Finn Cole) and behind a U.S. mailbox. Remember that Tommy sent his cousin to America at the end of Season 4, so it looks like her character will align with Michael in some shape or form.

Peaky Blinders has been gaining popularity, notably in the States. Knight’s masterpiece currently won the BAFTA award for best drama this year.  Seasons 6 and 7 (as well as a ballet and maybe even a movie!) are also in the works to continue the Shelby-family story.

More castings will be announced in the future, but Taylor-Joy will be a welcome addition to what is sure to be an incredible season.

Peaky Blinders Season 5 will air in 2019.
