Midge finally tells her starving family about her new profession and she sees a glimpse of the dark side of being an artist on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

It’s hard to believe that it’s been a year since Joel walked out on Midge, but Yom Kippur marks the occasion on the seventh episode of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

While Midge seems to be doing well one year later: Her stand-up career is getting hotter, her relationship with Benjamin is getting hotter, and she’s moved back up to the make-up counter at B. Altman. Plus, her dad seems to have accepted her new lifestyle.

Joel, on the other hand, is reluctantly embracing the single life. He bought the building his father’s factory is in, and he is living on the top floor. He’s also the object of many eligible ladies’ affections.

I hate cheaters, but I like Joel and feel sorry for him. Even though Midge seems to have forgiven him, he’s having trouble forgiving himself. I think he’s sorry and regrets it but can’t seem to get past it.

Back to Midge and Benjamin – they are hanging out at the hottest bar in Manhattan for the underground art scene. Benjamin is star struck by the men he sees, and Midge knows none of them. But then they see the most famous unknown artist in the world, Declan Howell (Rufus Sewell). A drunk, loud artist who refuses to sell his work.

Naturally, Midge must introduce themselves to him, and he’s so dazzled by her milky white complexion that he invites them to his studio the following day.

Through Declan, Midge sees the downside of being an artist. He’s incredibly gifted and talented, but he’s also alone. He’s given up everything for his art. It seems as though Midge isn’t ready to give up on love or give up her family for her career just yet.

And now we arrive at Yom Kippur break-fast. Everyone is starving and anxious about the Rabbi coming to join them. And this is the moment Abe decides Midge should tell the rest of the family about her career as a comic.

I expected Rose to be upset, but she was more bewildered than anything. And the arrival of Susie (Midge had a gig at the Gaslight after dinner) made Rose focus on the fact that the “plumber” from Steiner’s Resort was sitting at the table.

The Maisels were more focused on the fact that Midge is not particularly funny and Astrid announced that she was (finally) expecting.

So, basically, Abe chose the perfect time for Midge to break the news. No one got angry, no one cried. It came and went. They ate their (cold) food, and Midge left for her gig.
With Midge and Susie about to embark on their first tour, the family will have more time to get used to the idea.
