Netflix’s Selection Day season 1, episode 2 recap
By Monita Mohan
Mohan Kumar is desperate to enroll his sons in a cricket club so that they can practice for Selection Day, but fate has other plans for them in the second episode of the Netflix series.
Mohan Kumar (Rajesh Tailang) is able to bribe his way into the Panthers Cricket Club – his top pick for his sons to join – in the second episode of Selection Day.
He challenges the coach to bring on his best bowler against whom his sons, Radha (Yash Dholye) and Manju (Mohammad Samad), can play. Mohan has forked out a lot of cash to give his boys this opportunity but he is swiftly kicked out by the club management.
We had surmised from the first episode of the series that Anand Mehta (Akshay Oberoi) was out to demolish the West Mumbai school that Nellie Weinberg (Ratna Pathak Shah) runs.

He tries hard to sweet-talk her into selling the land to him so that he can make a state-of-the-art facility in its place. While he makes a good case for himself, she seems unrelenting.
Mohan is indefatigable in his search for a cricket club to enroll his sons in. He gets kicked out of several of them, leaving the boys disheartened. Manju especially hates their circumstances as he would rather be in school studying to become a scientist. That’s what his mum has always wanted as well. Unlike Manju, Radha loves cricket and he is adamant his brother helps him if both of them are to achieve their own dreams.
After being rejected by every club, Mohan has a new plan. The boys will train in the place where the Indian great, Sachin Tendulkar, learned his cricketing ropes – Shivaji Park, Mumbai. It’s a rough place with uneven pitches and tough players, but Mohan is unphased. Well, he is about to get very lucky.
Narayan Sadashiv Kulkarni, better known as Tommy Sir (Mahesh Manjrekar), who works at Nellie’s school as an art teacher, is dragged out of his house by his ailing wife, Geeta (Geetanjali Kulkarni).
She makes him recite the vows they took on their wedding day, one of which was his wish to discover a new Sir Donald Bradman or Sunil Gavaskar, both of whom are considered to be among the greatest batters ever to have played cricket professionally.
Manju really struggles at the crease. The uneven bounce and unfamiliar pace of the bowler make it impossible for him to even make contact with the ball, forget playing well. He ties his mother’s hairband to his bat for good luck, but it doesn’t help. He is knocked unconscious.
That is when lord Subramanya appears to him. It’s been a pretty intense ride so far on Selection Day, but it’s still surprising that a Hindu god is the comic relief for this episode. Subramanya asks Manju what he wants and the boy explains that he needs Radha to become the best batsman in the world so that the boys can be free of their father.
Subramanya hatches the perfect plan for Manju to succeed. The two of them work out physics problems that help Manju play better. He starts knocking them out of the park.
Now, it’s Radha’s turn. He can’t seem to miss either. Both the boys’ performance catches the eye of Tommy who immediately calls Nellie asking her to sponsor the boys. She’s still weighing up Anand’s offer, especially because Nellie feels that Tommy’s refusal to coach cricket again means there’s no need to hang on to the school grounds.
But Tommy has a plan. When he approaches Mohan with the scholarship offer, he is initially turned down, but when the boys insist, Mohan changes his mind. Radha is over the moon, but Manju has a lot playing on his mind. He still worries about his mum, but every time he enquires after her, his father refuses to provide a straight answer. It’s all about cricket for Mohan.
