Netflix greenlights Shadow and Bone series from Bird Box writer
Bird Box screenwriter Eric Heisserer is adapting Leigh Bardugo’s Grishaverse fantasy novels Shadow and Bone as well as Six of Crows for the small screen.
Netflix has given an eight-episode season order to Eric Heisserer’s Shadow and Bone, an adaptation of Leigh Bardugo’s best-selling Grishaverse fantasy novel series.
Heisserer is best known as the screenwriter of Netflix’s mega-hit Bird Box and of Arrival, for which he received an Oscar nomination. Both films were also adapted from novels.
Heisserer is serving as writer, creator and showrunner of Shadow and Bone. The show will combine storylines and characters from two series within the Grishaverse, Shadow and Bone and Six of Crows, according to Deadline.
"In a world cleaved in two by a massive barrier of perpetual darkness, where unnatural creatures feast on human flesh, a young soldier uncovers a power that might finally unite her country. But as she struggles to hone her power, dangerous forces plot against her. Thugs, thieves, assassins and saints are at war now, and it will take more than magic to survive."
Heisserer will also executive produce the series, alongside Bardugo, Pouya Shahbazian, Dan Levine, Dan Cohen, Josh Barry and Shawn Levy.
The latter four are producing for Levy’s 21 Laps Entertainment production company, which Heisserer previously worked with on Arrival.
21 Laps also currently produces Stranger Things for Netflix, so Shadow and Bone has now been incorporated into that existing deal.
Bardugo launched the Grishaverse, which has since become a global phenomenon, with 2012’s Shadow and Bone, the first in a trilogy of novels.
Six of Crows, the first of two books set in the same universe, was published in 2015. Bardugo’s latest Grishaverse novel King of Scars is set to debut later this year and will kickoff another duology.
