Legion: FX announces the third season will be the end
Legion is officially coming to an end on FX.
At the TCA’s today, FX announced the upcoming third season of its mind-bending X-Men series will serve as its ending. Deadline reports Legion was not canceled but that series creator, Noah Hawley, wanted to end it this way.
Warning: Spoilers for Legion season 2
The future of Legion has been up in the air since news of the Disney/FOX merger. Marvel has not revealed what their plans are for the mutant characters once the merger is completed. However, with Legion coming to an end it does make us wonder if the writing is on the wall for the fate of FOX’s The Gifted.

Unfortunately, FX didn’t offer up any details regarding season 3 at the TCA’s. The show is expected to return sometime this spring yet there has been no confirmed release date. On top of that, it’s unclear which actors will be returning.
It seems inevitable that Dan Stevens will be back as the lead character, David Haller. Also expected to return are Rachel Keller as Syd, Aubrey Plaza as Lenny, as well as Bill Irwin and Amber Midthunder as Cary/Kerry. We wouldn’t be surprised to see Jemaine Clement, Hamish Linklater, and Navid Negahban also appear in the third season.
However, fans most likely want to know if Jean Smart and Katie Aselton will be reprising their roles. Both actresses had major roles in the first season but didn’t play as major of a part in the second season. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Smart said it’s possible her character will play a diminished role in season 3.
Legion finished season 2 on a divisive note. In the comics, the character of David Haller has usually been portrayed as an antagonist to the X-Men. It seems like the series is heading in that direction when it’s revealed David is the one who destroys the world. The show also brought up a major issue of consent which divided viewers. Many fans stepped in to defend David as the hero of the story while others found it difficult to watch him head down a dark path.
