Gatiss and Moffat comment on possibility of Sherlock season five

Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat might still return with more Sherlock, maybe. But only after they’re done with their Dracula adaptation, so maybe later.

The will they/won’t they dance of whether Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat have any intention of ever returning to the world of Sherlock continues to fluctuate. The latest is that Gatiss and Moffat say that fans shouldn’t assume that they won’t eventually return to making new Sherlock episodes. That’s still rather vague and non-committal, but it’s better than a straight up no. In an interview with CinemaBlend, the two spoke about whether or not there’s a possibility of another season.

"“Well, we’re never not talking to each other because we’re friends! We hang out,” said Moffat. “We’ve never said necessarily goodbye to Sherlock. No, we’ll see. We’ll see.”"

So season four was not considered a definitive end but could stand happily as an ending for the creators if it came to that.

We all know, of course, that even given the intention of continuing with the series how difficult it would be to line up everyone’s schedules. Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch are now high-profile, high-demand Hollywood actors and both have increasingly hectic schedules. Then there’s Freeman’s well-known frustration with the fan response to season four and how he dislikes the pressure put on the actors and creators to make the show good.

The fan response to Freeman was fairly negative, and while he could have expressed himself more tactfully, I don’t believe the intention behind the words was to be as critical and unappreciative of Sherlock fans as he came off. Still, there’s no knowing whether Freeman would be interested in even doing a fifth season if it came to that.

dark. Next. Is Sherlock coming back for season 5 soon?

In the meantime, Gatiss and Moffat are working on that new Dracula show. Not much is known about it aside from the subject matter, but that’s enough for me when it comes to these two and anything involving Dracula. What we do know is that Dracula will be “the hero of his own story” and that Danish actor Claes Bang (The Square) will play the main role. The last word on Sherlock for the moment comes from Gatiss, who told CinemaBlend:

"“One thing at a time. Dracula occupies a lot of headspace.”"
