Deadly Class season 1, episode 5 recap: Saudade
Deadly Class heads to Vegas for one memorable trip!
Before “Saudade” had even aired, SyFy had been promoting it as one of the biggest standout episodes of the season. Even the Deadly Class cast said it was one of their favorites to film and for their characters. The hour is told almost entirely seen through Marcus’ point of view as we follow him through an unfortunate acid trip. Everything that could go wrong happens, but at least the kids manage to escape sort of scot free.
Bunk Drugs
The road trip actually starts out with some fun bonding between the group. Billy and Maria are sitting the backseat smoking a joint while the two chat with Willie regarding some failed hook-ups. Unfortunately, they’re all having so much fun that no one, not even Saya, has noticed Chico following them in his own car. Nevertheless, the group makes their way to a road stop full of hippies partying.

Marcus declines Saya’s offer to get him some drugs because his street pride is too strong to agree. He chooses to find his own drugs because he can tell the difference between the good and bunk stuff. The girls couldn’t care less and go off on their own while the boys make their way in the opposite direction. Billy quickly abandons the group after catching a glimpse of a nearby woman while Marcus comes up empty with any actual drugs.
Everyone meets inside where Saya and Maria are currently enjoying a high thanks to some lines of coke. Saya once again offers to get Marcus some more, but he proclaims he can do fine on his own. Following this declaration, he attempts to buy a drink but the bartender just laughs at his fake ID. Returning to the table defeated, he gets another opportunity when a different drug dealer gives the group a bunch of free acid with the hope they’ll buy from him later.
Saya and Maria jump at the opportunity and also force Willie to take one as well. Marcus, desperate to prove himself, tells the guy to “f*ck off” before taking all of the leftover acid. He thinks the entire thing is bunk and isn’t all that worried. Not to mention, he’s the “acid king” of Deadly Class. Of course, he couldn’t be more wrong.

The Acid King
Marcus winds up shaking under the car worried about techno mountains coming after him. The rest of the group can only laugh and Billy comes back satisfied from his endeavors. Luckily, he’s able to coax Marcus out from under the car with the help of Maria so the group can continue on their trip.
In another homage to the comic, Deadly Class pulls a lot of Marcus’ trippy images straight from the comics. The trip through the strip in Vegas is beautifully shot, especially because it’s the only moment in this episode where Marcus is enjoying the drugs. Everyone is having a great time in fact, which offers some nice levity in a pretty serious episode.
At the hotel, Marcus is continuing to trip and his visions are getting bleaker. He wants to call his parents and apologize but Billy has to gently remind him both of his parents are dead. Poor Billy is also on edge while he waits for his father to return to the room next door. He tells Marcus that his father needs to die because he’ll always be too selfish to realize he can’t keep risking his family. But that doesn’t mean the kid is excited to commit such a violent act.
While Marcus claims he’s ready to help, he blacks out between leaving his hotel room and entering Billy’s father. He walks in to find Billy screaming and attempting to strangle his dad. Things get out of hand when his dad gains the upper hand. Marcus steps in, only to receive a beating himself. Eventually, he grabs a nearby ashtray and smashes it over Billy’s dad’s head, killing him instantly.
Billy cries over his father’s body begging to know why he couldn’t just be a good father. Once again, it’s another amazing performance by Liam James and he’s quickly proving to be one of the strongest assets on Deadly Class. Marcus is still tripping though, and he views Billy as a young boy weeping rather than the teenager he is.

Elevator Etiquette
After they hide the body, Marcus loses Billy on the casino floor. A photo of Ice-T on a slot machine encourages to give it his best shot. Shockingly, he manages to hit a jackpot but is pulled away by the casino guards. Throughout the episode, we’re sprinkled with images of Marcus in the security office while Master Lin stares at him disapprovingly. However, it’s revealed Lin isn’t even there but just a manifestation of Marcus’ mind.
The guards let Marcus go so long as he hands over the money and leaves the hotel, to which he agrees. Hallucination Lin encourages Marcus to call his mother and apologize for being such a disappointment. It’s unusual Lin would leave out Marcus’ father, which makes us think Marcus is currently projecting his father onto Lin.
Nevertheless, Marcus escapes to a nearby elevator when a familiar face enters. At first, he doesn’t recognize the guy and he hilariously worries about not remembering elevator etiquette. When the guy turns around, he recognizes his old bunkmate from the boy’s home, Chester. While Chester was planning to kill him, he now realizes he will need a better plan. He’s hoping to secure a book and movie deal from this murder so it will require some real “pizzazz”. With Chester back in the wind, Marcus is understandably terrified about what could happen.

Chico’s Revenge
Marcus flees to Maria’s room where he finds her still in her bathing suit from the trip to the pool. She’s able to calm him down but he discovers her new passport. He’s shocked, but she asks if it’s so wrong for her to run when someone you thought loved you would only cause you pain. Despite his current state, Marcus lets her know he understands because that had happened to him. The two kiss and she asks if he’s ever been laid on acid. Marcus admits he’s never actually had sex before and the two continue to passionately make out.
Unfortunately for the couple, Chico comes crashing in at this moment. He’s furious and begins shooting at the two. While Maria is able to momentarily stall him, Chico slams her into the wall and takes after Marcus. The boys’ fight winds up going into the street before Chico throws him through a convenience store window.
Considering Chico is fired up and Marcus is still on drugs, the fight ends with the latter getting beaten nearly to death. The store owner tries to threaten Chico into stopping but he manages to shoot him dead as well. Marcus takes the opportunity to drag himself outside to hide inside the dumpster. Chico finds him quickly and despite Marcus asking him to come back later, he tells him to climb out of the trash.
Chico places the gun on the ground to give Marcus a fighting chance. Luckily, the rest of the gang shows up in the nick of time. Maria begs for him to stop but he’s too furious over the current situation. Billy also tries to talk him down but winds up getting stabbed in the gut for his troubles. She angrily tells him that his family didn’t save him but they destroyed her soul. They forced her to run their drugs and then pimped her out to their son.
With Chico distracted, Willie grabs the gun and threatens to kill him. Yet, Chico has long suspected Willie’s rep was a lie and it’s revealed that the latter can’t pull the trigger. Realizing there are no other options, Maria uses her fan to slice Chico’s throat. With no time to hide the body, the group runs and leaves him to bleed out in the alley. Unfortunately, Chester stumbles upon it in the closing moments of this Deadly Class episode.

The End of a Sleepover
On the way home, the group is quiet as they soak in the fallout from the night’s events. Marcus says it feels like the end of a sleepover when your friend has to go home the next morning. Despite Chico’s death, Maria kisses him and he falls asleep on her shoulder. Maria looks on from the mirror, and it looks like this love triangle is about to heat up.
This series has been a big surprise, with each episode getting better than the next. While we return to King’s Dominion next week to deal with the consequences from their actions, we do wish could have spent more time with the gang in Vegas.
