Stand Up and Away! with Brian Regan season 1, episode 2 recap

Episode 2 of Netflix series Stand Up and Away! with Brian Regan looks at bad company names, dangerous products, and doughnut making.

Stand Up and Away! with Brian Regan continues down the observational comedy rabbit hole in episode 2. Here he tackles the issue of band name branding, citing a real-life example of the “Fiedler Roofing Company,” which obviously should have been “Fiedler on the Roof.” Apparently, they thought it would be too on-the-nose obvious, but sometimes that’s what marketing’s all about! Nevertheless, Regan’s sketches playfully engage the premise, taking many familiar adages and making them completely unmarketable.

Next, Brian Regan addresses people who habitually tell pointless, rambling stories. We all know the type, right? They can never settle on one point, never know when to shut up, and often contradict themselves (sometimes in the same sentence). It’s enough to make one’s head spin, but Brian Regan spins it into some silly and likable sketch comedy. While his ultimate solution reminds me a bit of Dave Chappelle’s “Wrap-it-up box” (from Chappelle’s Show), it’s still an original enough concept to win a few laughs.

Ironing boards are dangerous, and the Red Guy Gang

Stand Up and Away! with Brian Regan next tackles the household hazards of ironing boards, comparing them to other dangerous products we can easily buy. In the ensuing sketch, things threaten to get a little bloody, leading up to a rather edgy (pun intended?) moment for the show. It’s also sort of an interesting topic and reminds us that virtually anything can be dangerous (for example, back when I was a dishwasher, I actually cut my hands a bit with a steel brillo pad!). Brian Regan also examines the intricacies of contact lenses and a spin on The Blue Man Group called “Red Guy Gang.”

Killer whales and special donuts

As happened in the premiere, Regan takes an audience question. Brian relates an early experience as a comedian at a water park, where his joke about a killer whale didn’t go over so well. He also admits that he’s intrigued by donuts — particularly the partially sprinkled kind. He then imagines what it’s like at a donut design meeting. Finally, Brian ends up crawling into a hole in the wall. If you’re wondering about the context for that, well, I don’t fully understand it, either. Nevertheless, it happens.

In conclusion

This episode of Stand Up and Away! with Brian Regan isn’t quite as funny as the premiere, but it takes a few chances. The strongest point is that it examines the mundane and benign quirks of life and exposes them for being absurd. It’s not the most topical show around, but there’s a little more to it than meets the eye. It’s also potentially a good way to introduce people to Regan and his style of comedy.
