The Haunting of Hill House renewed as an anthology, The Haunting of Bly Manor to be second installment

One of the best Netflix original series of 2018 was The Haunting of Hill House and the news broke today that there will be more.

Much like Fargo, which adapted a movie into a television series and then morphed into an anthology based around the ideas and themes of the original, Netflix is turning The Haunting into an anthology series as well.

Deadline reports that Netflix renewed The Haunting for a second season and will title the next series The Haunting of Bly Manor.

The new season brings back the same showrunners in Mike Flanagan and Tracy May but will introduce a new haunting and a new cast of characters. It is unclear whether or not the seasons will exist in the same world, as Fargo’s did.

Much like The Haunting of Hill House, which was based on the novel by Shirley JacksonThe Haunting of Bly Manor is also based on a literary source. In this case, it is Henry James’ gothic horror novella, The Turn of the Screw.

Written in 1898, The Turn of the Screw is about a young governess hired to watch after the nephew and niece of a man after the children’s parent’s died. This takes place at Bly Manor, where the governess starts to see what might be supernatural figures coming and going from the manor.

This isn’t the first time that The Turn of the Screw has been adapted. It showed up as the movie The Innocents in 1961, directed by Jack Clayton and starring Deborah Kerr. Nicole Kidman’s film The Others shares similar themes with The Turn of the Screw, although it was not actually based on the novel.

dark. Next. Breaking Bad: Sequel movie may premiere on Netflix

Mike Flanagan and Tracy May have a long relationship with each other, leading into this new Netflix original series. They worked together on Absentia in 2011 and then broke out with the horror movie Oculus. They then teamed up with three movies for Netflix, including the Stephen King adaptation Gerald’s Game and the horror movies Hush and Before I Wake.

Flanagan and Macy are also in post-production on another Stephen King, Doctor Sleep, the sequel to The Shining.

The Haunting of Bly Manor is set to debut in 2020.
