BBC has released a trailer for the upcoming adaptation of Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy.

The 30-second first look at the big-budget series features several of its stars, including Dafne Keen (Logan), James McAvoy (X-Men: First Class), Ruth Wilson (The Affair), Clarke Peters (The Wire), and Lin-Manual Miranda (Mary Poppins Returns).

It also delivers nods to the epic nature of the story that His Dark Materials will tell, utilizing quick cuts of action-packed scenes.

According to Deadline, executive producer Jane Tranter said there would be a lot more to the series than the trailer indicated but that the production wanted to tantalize fans with this first trailer.

She explained,

"We wanted fans to have a tiny glimpse of His Dark Materials. As with Lyra, there are many more worlds to discover as we start upon this epic journey."

Check it out below:

His Dark Materials is based on Pullman’s epic fantasy trilogy, which includes the books Northern Lights, The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass.

The series’ first season will focus on Keen’s Lyra, a young girl in a parallel universe who discovers a plot involving stolen children while searching for a kidnapped friend. In the process, she travels between other worlds, teams up with a boy named Will, and tries to understand something called Dust.

Tom Hooper (The King’s Speech) will serve as the lead director on the series and direct the first two episodes. The show is written by Jack Thorne (National Treasure). It started filming late last year at Wolf Studios Wales in Cardiff.

Although a release date for the first season of His Dark Materials has yet to be announced, BBC has already renewed the series for a second.

BBC has partnered with HBO for the show, which is being produced by Bad Wolf and New Line Cinema.

The first look gives only a hint of the series’ look and feel, while providing minimal information about the story. As the series gets closer to premiering, a longer trailer with more information will no doubt be released. Right now, we’ll have to be satisfied with this brief glance at the show.
