The Handmaid’s Tale releases first look at graphic novel adaptation
By Ariba Bhuvad
Did you ever imagine what the world of The Handmaid’s Tale would look like in a graphic novel?
The Handmaid’s Tale has been portrayed through the various mediums of art over the years ranging from plays to podcasts to the critically-acclaimed Hulu series. The Margaret Atwood 1985 novel is now taking on a different type of adaptation through a graphic novel which will be released by Doubleday Books, according to the Deadline exclusive.
In this exclusive, fans of the story can now see the world of Gilead come to life via drawings and sketches. While the Hulu original is one form of the story coming to life, a graphic novel is a whole other ballgame and one I’m looking forward to checking out. If you want to see the exclusive illustrations, head to the Deadline article here–it’s so worth it!
The Handmaid’s Tale graphic novel will be available for purchase starting March 26th and will feature the artwork created by Renée Nault, A Canadian artist personally chosen by Margaret Atwood herself. If that’s not a huge honor, we have no idea what is. And as it turns out, Atwood is a big fan of comic books and graphic novels so this new adaptation of The Handmaid’s Tale is right up her alley.
As the creator, Atwood is very excited to see the story she wrote so many years ago come to life in this unique and creative way.
"As someone who has drawn admittedly basic comics for decades, I’ve always enjoyed the form; and as someone who wrote a bunch of screenplays in the 70s, I understand some of the challenges. Each of these forms is able to do things that the others can’t, so it’s fascinating to see what other creative people come up with."
Currently, Atwood is busy at work preparing for The Handmaid’s Tale sequel, The Testaments, set to publish and release in September. Considering all the success behind the series and novel over the years, it’s safe to say The Handmaid’s Tale is going to be around for quite a while.
The Handmaid’s Tale will premiere its third season on June 5th on Hulu–don’t miss it!
