Netflix has announced that The End of the F***ing World has officially started production on season two.

Netflix recently tweeted a photo of the first episode script for season two of The End of the F***ing World, confirming that production has started on the surprise Netflix hit. The dark comedy is a Channel 4 and Netflix co-production based on the comic book series by Charles Forsman and adapted for television by Charlie Covell (Marcella).

The series follows two teens Alyssa (Jessica Barden, Penny Dreadful) and James (Alex Lawther, Black Mirror) as they take a road trip together in search of Alyssa’s father. However, unbeknownst to Alyssa, James plans to kill her. Alyssa has issues of her own though and doesn’t exactly make life easy for James.

After a long wait and a tense cliffhanger ending to season one, Netflix and Channel 4 finally confirmed the series had been renewed for a second season, with Covell returning to write the series. While the first season followed the Forsman comics pretty faithfully, season two will be original material written by Covell, so there’s no knowing what will come next for James and Alyssa. Season one ended on a cliffhanger as police closed in on the pair, with James fleeing across the beach where they’d been cornered. As police took aim at James, a gunshot rang out across the beach as the scene cut to black.

According to Lawther, the ending as originally shot implied that James was likely killed. With an eye to a second season, however, it was decided to leave the ending more ambiguous. Channel 4’s head of drama, Beth Willis shared her excitement with Digital Spy.

"“We’re so proud that this global success story began at Channel 4 and that a second series is on its way. Charlie’s witty, wonderful world is back, and we can’t wait to see where she takes it next.”"

Considering how outrageous, dark, and funny the first season was, I think we’re in for something even weirder with only Covell’s imagination to guide the story.
