Hulu’s Harlots gets season three premiere date and new cast members
Hulu’s period drama Harlots sets season three premiere date and announces new cast members.
Hulu’s female lead period drama Harlots has announced that season three will premiere on the streaming service on July 10, with new episodes airing every subsequent Wednesday. The series is set in Georgian London and inspired by The Covent Garden Ladies by Hallie Rubenhold. It follows the lives of the Wells family, whose matriarch moves her brothel to Greek Street Soho for better opportunities and higher class clientele.
The move comes with its share of risk and challenge, as it puts her in direct competition with her former madam Lydia Quigley. This is also at a time of social and moral reform with officials constantly threatening the family’s only means of livelihood. The series stars Samantha Morton (Fantastic Beasts) as matriarch Margaret Wells, Jessica Brown Findlay (Downton Abbey) as her eldest daughter Charlotte, and Eloise Smyth (The Frankenstein Chronicles) as her youngest daughter Lucy. Lesley Manville plays Margaret’s main competition, Lydia Quigley.
Hulu has also announced that season three has added Alfie Allen (Game of Thrones) and Ash Hunter (The Secret Agent) to the cast. Allen and Hunter will play pimping brothers Isaac and Hal Pincher who return from the Seven Years War with an ambition to take over the London prostitution scene. As of the end of season two, Charlotte is running the brothel after her mother is sent to America in chains. Not only will she have to resist the encroaching Pincher brothers, but defend herself against Lydia’s revenge.
Unlike many female lead dramas, there is also plenty of women working behind the scenes to bring the story of the Wells women to life. The series was created by Moira Buffini (Jane Eyre, 2011) and Alison Newman (Eastenders) who executive produce alongside Alison Owen (Shaun of the Dead), Debra Hayward (Head of Monumental Pictures), and Alison Carpenter. Buffini, Jane English (Sugar Rush), Vivienne Harvey (Black Earth Rising) and Jessica Ruston (Casualty) are writing for season three with Robin Sheppard (The Bill), Chloe Thomas (Victoria), and Debs Paterson (Humans) directing.
